Boynton Beach: Eco-City!

Much is being said about Boynton Beach's recent developements, as their new branding promise begins to soar. The chatter amoung those in "the know," is high spirited and optimistic.  Since last month the City of Boynton Beach has been slowly presnting the public with one achievment after another.  These milestones are ground breaking advances for Palm Beach County!

Breeze into Boynton Beach!
You may what to live where the sun cools your home!

-Rolando Chang Barrero

Here is what Eliot Kleinberg of the Palm Beach Post shared with us today!

Boynton complex gets national 'green' notice

 — Seabourn Cove, going up on the south end of town, has been recognized by the National Green Building Standard
as the nation's largest "green" multi-family community.
The gated 456-unit complex, on 23 acres on Federal Highway, just south of Gulfstream Boulevard and just north of the Delray Beach line, helps revitalize what had been a blighted stretch.
It's expected to have its first tenants by mid-July.
The city's Community Redevelopment Agency gave the site's developers tax money used to encourage "green" projects.
Developers say the complex design will immediately result in about a 40-percent drop in individual power bills over comparable complexes.
They hope one day to reach "net zero;" power generated by solar panels and other sources would provide electricity to all residents in the complex.
Seabourn also will feature a 20 percent to 25 percent reduction in individual water bills.
All garages in the 300 town homes will have electric car charging stations; two more will be in a common area.
A system will collect and filter rainfall and return it to a fresh-water supply beneath the property instead of draining it into the nearby Intracoastal Waterway.
The complex also will feature a quarter-mile-long "eco-art" promenade along its eastern boundary that will link to the city's planned Blueway/Greenway pedestrian trail and its counterpart just south in Delray Beach.
The complex is being built in partnership with the city's Climate Action Plan; officials say it's the first such public-private collaboration in Florida.
Because the city doesn't have the power to require such "green" measures from private business, it and the city's CRA offered Seabourn Cove's developers property-tax rebates totaling about $2 million over the next decade, which will cover much of the $2.7 million the developer will spend on the energy-savings program.
Developers say it, in return, will build a complex that should increase property tax values.
Seabourn is one of two developments in that area. The other: The Estates at Heritage Club, single-family houses and town homes at the northwest corner of Gulfstream Boulevard and Old Dixie Highway.
Both projects originally had been slated as condos.
They and a 93,755-square-foot 24-hour Walmart across the street that opened late last year serve as bookends of an intersection once known for an adult nightclub, closed stores and empty lots.
The work can't come at a better time. While in the works for several years, it helps provide positive images for a city that was slammed by the real estate slump; by the 2010-11 budget year, the city's total property value was 40 percent that of a 2007 peak.
Depressed value means less tax and fee revenue, and the city had to slash budgets, reduce services and conduct layoffs.
While there's a long way to go, the city's interim development director told commissioners at a March meeting that construction activity is up considerably.

ActivistArtistA's Bay Gates Project

As the City of Boynton Beach takes on a progressive identity as an Eco-City, the community is going gaga over the changes! Even the children are jumping on board!

On Monday, April 26, 2012, The City Library of Boynton Beach hosted a fun filled workshop for over 20 children as part of their committment to the Earth Day presentations that included the unveiling of the Library's Electric Vehicle Charging Station the privious Saturday.

With free reuseable water bottles in one hand, small tree's in paper cones to plant in the other, and the energy only children can have at 4:30 in the afternoon they arrived at the large multi-purpose room which was set up for fun!

A short video/slide presentation by City of Boynton Beach Interim Developement Director, Nancy Byrne, provoked the children to ask questions about solar energy, an engagement that soon turned into the customary sing along of, "...But why can't we go on the roof of the firestation an see the panels!" After all children are children!

Next, was a trip out doors where the partly sunnyday helped in showing how a solar car reacts to--well, to the sun of course. The miniature prototype went back and forth, and round and round. The kids loved it!

Finally, my part! Umm, not exactlly!

I asked to join the team that would be working with the children at the workshop as soon as I heard that it was a pinwheel project! I have a new found appreciation for these little spinners!

Team members who helped facilitate the project included:
City Staff Members
Jaime Wooley
Jean Dieudonne
Jamie Sanchez
Cheryl Fishman

Examiner Review of Boynton Beach Art District

Boynton Beach Neighborhood Art District offers an alternative scene

: West Palm Beach Fine Arts Examiner

Slideshow

Last Thursday evening the Boynton Beach Neighborhood Art District was buzzing with artists and art enthusiasts happy to be exploring the warehouses on Industrial Avenue in Boynton Beach, which are bursting with art.  Many were there for the opening of Packaging Nature, the new exhibit in ActivistArtistA Gallery, 422 Industrial Avenue. Most took advantage of the Art Walk visiting the other studios and galleries that fill the warehouse spaces.
Rolando Chang Barrero, the artist owner of ActivistArtistA Gallery, left the saturated market of Miami Beach with hopes of creating a vibrant art scene in Boynton Beach.  He and Rick Beau Lieusculptorpainter, and a founder of the City’s Art in Public Places Program, share the warehouse space.  Rick’s Neighborhood Gallery was established in 1988, and in addition to his own work, the gallery represents over a dozen other recognized artists. Their collaboration has drawn other artists to the area and has developed the monthly Art Walk bringing new life and energy into the “District.”

In the Packaging Nature exhibit and the other surrounding studios, the artwork is not consistent in the level of technical skill.  In fact, some of the pieces are reminiscent of work done by art students – imaginative, innovative, and daring – but also immature.  Still the overall atmosphere is exciting, and Barrero’s enthusiasm and openness to new and alternative forms of art is refreshing. One can only appreciate the fact that the City of Boynton Beach recognizes the worth of having an art district and is supporting the efforts of the artistic community.
City Commissioner Bill Orlove was on hand to express his support as was Debby Coles-Dobay, Boynton Beach Public Art Administrator. “This is the first and only industrial arts district in Palm Beach County,” she proudly states.  “It’s edgy and offers a forum for emerging artists to meet and show their work.”  Let’s hope the community continues to support this endeavor.

Short History

ActivistArtistA Gallery Grand Opening: November 11, 2011

Rolando Chang Barrero's ActivistArtistA Bay Gates Project began with the installation of Chan Shephard's "Madrina," which adorns the curator's studio gate. The last installment completed to date was Lucia Hare-Leahy's "Wild West Hero," projected animation on April 26, 2012.
Like a phoenix, the Boynton Beach Art District has risen high and continues to soar.
Instead of ashes, this phoenix was raised for the oil slicks of the industrial neighborhood just west of I95 off of Boynton Beach Blvd., on West Industrial Ave.

The history of The District begins back to the late 80's when artist Richard Beau-Lieu first took to the area. Opening a studio and initiating the cleanup of the rubbish filled street, Richard was intrumental in getting the area recognized as the Neighborhood Arts District of Boynton Beach in 1989.
