Outsider art comes inside with the opening of Tom Bazinet's "One Man's Trash: The Work of Tiki Tom" at 7 p.m. Friday at Rolando Chang Barrero's ActivistArtistA Gallery in the Boynton Beach Arts District.
On display through Dec. 20, Bazinet, 53, transforms the gallery into an eco-conscience environment showcasing found objects of old hubcaps, coconuts, broken dolls, used toothbrushes, combs and plastic waste from years of beachcombing.
The Florida native and tree cutter known as Tiki Tom has been beachcombing for more than 40 years, originally at Phipps Ocean Park Beach in Lake Worth, until parking rates increased. Bazinet now focuses on cleaning up Boynton Beach.
"Boynton Beach has been good to me," he said. "I started with a 5-gallon bucket," he said, and was soon bringing a 30-gallon bin and filling it up with debris every time – old ship ropes, plastic lids, lighters, toothbrushes and old buoys.
He sports a gold earring, a found object from beachcombing 20 years ago that he has worn ever since.
Faces of the sun created from old hubcaps adorn his purple van and his profession as a tree cutter allows him to utilize his raw materials for ornamental tikis made from recycled materials, 10 of which were commissioned as an island of tikis by the city of Boynton Beachfor the Mangrove Walk on Northeast Fourth Avenue across from St. Mark Catholic Church.
Debby Coles-Dobay, the city's public art administrator who commissioned Bazinet's installation for the city, said, "Tiki Tom transforms his passion for the environment into his art."
"He is dedicated to collecting trash from the waterways and beaches, and using it to perfect his techniques. He creates whimsical sculptural characters that engage the community to care for the environment," she said.
Many of his sculptures use mannequins, sea grass and shells with plants growing out of them to create living sculptures. He creates mosaics from found colored beach glass.
The self-described eccentric, with his long hair, earing and tattoos, said, "I'm grateful to Boynton Beach for supporting the arts district. It's becoming an interesting place and I give the city credit for that."
Barrero said, "Tiki Tom makes cleaning up the beach and creating art a synchronism. He transforms the profane to the sublime, bringing his outsider art indoors to create an environment for contemplation, introspection and marvel. "

ActivistArtistA Art Walk

Less than two years ago, the strip of warehouses off of Boynton Beach's Industrial Avenue, just a block west of I-95, was home to old machine parts, drab façades, and a couple of high-end galleries that have been around since the '80s. Now, it's nearly all filled with art. Things began to turn around for the area when artist and gallery owner Rolando Chang Barrero moved up from South Beach, turning his studio into a gallery and taking the reins on the newly developing Boynton Beach Arts District. With a crew of like-minded arts advocates including Lea Vendetta, Andrew Ackerman, Alexia Hemingway, and Chan Shepard of the KeroWACKED Crew, a growing collection of projects meant to infuse and inspire the area with art, and new galleries popping up like weeds, it's no surprise a monthly art walk brings in the community. Apart from spearheading the Bay Gates Project, which assigns a different artist to paint a warehouse gate each month, Barrero's ActivistArtistA gallery also sponsors the Boynton Beach Arts District Art Walk. Visitors can expect to see open galleries and studio spaces, open-jam musical performances, food trucks, raffles, and lots more arts-fueled surprises on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Man with Flamingo Tie by Rolando Chang Barrero at Art Rock! Saturday at The Armory Art Center...

Special thanks to Amanda Linton and Colleen Dougher!

This Saturday! It's all about Art Rock!

Art Rock continues to roll

The fourth annual West Palm Beach fair delivers the kitsch.

Art Rock, a cash-and-carry art show in West Palm Beach, may not be the best place to find a landscape painting to hang over the couch. But for those people who would appreciate a portrait of a bunny with antlers, a T-shirt that depicts a roaring lion riding a bicycle or knitted cupcakes, it's a fine way to spend an afternoon.
Now in its fourth year, Art Rock is one of several events juggled by Amanda Linton, who, along with her husband, JR Linton, owns the West Palm Beach tattoo parlor and art gallery Ink and Pistons..
Linton's art-fair career began with the 2007 launch of Stitch Rock, an indie craft fair that has spawned events such as the monthly Downtown Open Market and annual fairs such as the vintage-oriented Retro Indie Market and Art Rock. As the name of this last event suggests, it's all about art.
"There are a few handmade vendors, too," Linton says. "But I usually try to have people who blur that line between craft and art."
This year's lineup includes Calan Ree, creator of a weekly web comic about "a gingerbread boy, his odd, silent, skeletal girlfriend and the sister who wants him dead"; Freckled Purl, who crochets and knits objects designed to prompt smiles; and Rolando Chang Barrero, a painter and the owner of ActivistArtistA Gallery.
Barrero, who first participated in Art Rock last year, says he traded works with other artists, enjoyed treats and made money. "I sold over eight pieces and got a commission by a designer for a private client," he recalls. This year, he's back with new works, including his $175 acrylic-on-canvas titled "Man With Flamingo Tie."

"We have 60 vendors this year," Linton says. "I would like to say that half of those are new, which I'm excited [about]."
Among the newbies is Robert Jimenez, a.k.a. ZeroStreet, whose offerings include tiki mugs, pendants, paintings and 8x10 prints of "Bride," which depicts the frequently drawn and painted image of Elsa Lanchester as the Bride of Frankenstein. "It's one of the many enduring images from my childhood that informs my work," the artist says. "I hadn't ever drawn her before this piece."
Jimenez typically participates in specialty shows such as the Hukilau and Florida Supercon, but hopes to add Art Rock, which a friend recommended, to his rotation.
Art Rock will take place noon-6 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Armory Art Center, 1700 Parker Ave., in West Palm Beach. Admission is $5, free for kids 12 and under with adult. Call 561-832-1776 or go to ArtRockRocks.com.
