Heavy Offering of Cultural, Arts and Other Happenings, Including 17th Edition of ArtPalmBeach

Rolando Chang Barrero, Artist/Curator

"ArtPalmBeach presents another example as to why visiting and discovering West Palm Beach or any of the surrounding areas, often transforms into falling in love with South Florida and making it home."

West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) November 20, 2013
ArtPalmBeach celebrates its 17th anniversary at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach from January 24-27, 2014 with a preview on the evening of January 23. Both art critics and art enthusiasts deem ArtPalmBeach as one of the most influential contemporary art fairs on Florida's Gold Coast. Over 80 international galleries will be exhibiting contemporary works by both established and emerging artists.
The 2014 edition of ArtPalmBeach will feature Art Synergy, a historic gallery walk taking place throughout all of Palm Beach County from Friday January 24 through Monday January 27. The weekend of events will include gallery receptions, open artist studios, performances, museum openings and lectures, and several architectural tours, through six historic art districts in the county.
The six areas of exhibition for ArtSynergy will be ARTal’FRESCO in Boynton Beach, ART POP in Lake Worth, Continuum in West Palm Beach, ArtX in Historic Northwood Village, South Dixie Antique Row and Worth Avenue. The focus for ArtSynergy is to promote contemporary galleries, budding artists, established area museums, non-profit art centers, university galleries and a number of international artists who feature their works in these historic art districts.
Another feature and special focus of the 17th edition of ArtPalmBeach will be the result of a partnership forged with the International Sculpture Center in Washington D.C. and Sculpture magazine. The art fair will feature sculptures by known artists in mediums including metal, glass, porcelain, light and carbon.
West Palm Beach is a growing melting pot of culture and arts-based events, drawing international attention. Visiting and discovering West Palm Beach or any of the surrounding areas, often transforms into falling in love with South Florida and making West Palm Beach home. It is a tropical oasis as well as a bustling mecca – this combination is rare and unmatched.
The effect of the allure to West Palm Beach real estate is evident. Even after the tough hits to real estate market in the last several years, this particular area is one of the cities to bounce back the quickest.

"Graffiti is a misunderstood concept for a lot of people," he says. "If it's an illegal wall they call it graffiti. And if it's a legal wall they call it street art. The first painting was done on a wall in a cave. We've domesticated it and put it in galleries. But its natural habitat is outdoors."

Picture this: Hollywood as a giant canvas, ready for street art.

Colorful murals already adorn 10 downtown buildings, where they have been both praised and panned. But because they bring an energy and sense of identity, Commissioner Peter Hernandez plans to ask Wednesday that the program be expanded to the beach and other high traffic areas.
"Art is subjective," he said. "Some have hated it. Some have loved it. But people are talking about it."
Like Hollywood, Boynton Beach has embraced public art, requiring developers to set aside 1 percent of their construction budget to fund public art in the city. Murals pop from the doors and walls of warehouses in theBoynton Beach Arts District.
Debby Coles-Dobay, Public Arts Manager in Boynton, calls it a "mini-Wynwood," a reference to the Miami district where artists have helped transform a neighborhood of rundown warehouses into a bustling cultural hub.
But what flies in Hollywood and Boynton might not work inBoca Raton. Or Fort Lauderdale. Or Davie.
A street mural might clash with Davie's western theme, says Davie Councilman Bryan Caletka. The idea of a city-sanctioned street mural isn't even on Fort Lauderdale's radar, says city spokesman Chaz Adams.
And Boca?
"They all want to live in country clubs," says Rolando Chang Barrero, a West Palm Beach artist who runs theBoynton Beach Arts District. "That's why they designed so many country clubs with doormen and color codes. They want it standard, they want it safe."
Hernandez brushes aside such concerns.
He just wants people talking about the arts project, launched a year ago in an attempt to bring new life, energy and crowds to downtown.
"Our mural program has really taken off," says Jorge Camejo, who launched the series as executive director of Hollywood's Community Redevelopment Agency. "[It] has proven that inspiration and imagination can alter the general public's perception of the area as effectively as the murals transform bare walls into works of high art."
Hollywood already has the most street art in Broward County, says Commissioner Patricia Asseff, who wouldn't mind seeing more.
"Las Olas doesn't have them," she said. "Delray doesn't have them. If it works and people love them, we've given it a shot. People are coming down to look at these murals. I guess it gives the area a certain character. If it draws a crowd, then that's a good thing."

"For now, Hollywood's mural program is limited to the Live Music District, running along Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street between 21st Avenue and Young Circle.
Each downtown muralist was paid $1,000 for their work. The artists include David "Lebo" Le Batard, Ruben Ubiera, Jessy Nite, Luis Pinto, Eduardo Mendieta, Evoca1, 2alas, Michelle Weinberg, Rob Robi and Tatiana Suarez.
"I like it – most of it," said Hollywood resident Michael Tam Kai. "It's better than a bland concrete wall. It gives these young artists an outlet. And it's free."
Fellow resident Rita Gambardella would rather see the blank wall.
"When I first saw them, I thought it was graffiti," she said. "Then I found out it was commissioned."
Terry Cantrell, chair of the Hollywood Historic Preservation Board, echoes her sentiments.
"Lebo went hog wild with what basically looks like graffiti," he says.
But he admits, Lebo's mural does indeed stand out.
Love it or leave it, Hollywood's mural series evokes a reaction from those who see it, says Barrero.

Sun Sentinel: Passion For Paws Fundraiser at BBAD

This Thursday, November 14, 2013

Boynton Beach Art District
422 West Industrial Ave.
Boynton Beach, Florida

Talk radio host, local artists celebrate their Passion for Paws

A fundraiser for the pet rescue organization, Passion for Paws, will take place Thursday at theBoynton Beach Arts District.
Sponsored by Y. Cleomili Harris, aka Ms. Cleo, of Wahgwaan Entertainment Inc., LDC by LC Management and Rolando Chang Barrero's ActivistaArtista gallery, the event hopes to raise at least $3,000 for the organization.
Ava Rhodes, executive director of Passion for Paws, Inc., received the 2013 DunDun Award by Wahgwaan Entertainment, created in 2009 by Harris, host of "Conversations with Cleo" on BlogTalkRadio.com, in memory of her mother.
Passion for Paws is a nonprofit, charitable organization benefiting dogs and cats established in 2009 in West Palm Beach.
"We are committed to assisting and supporting local, small businesses and community nonprofits and Passion for Paws was a perfect fit," Harris said.
Unlike other pet rescues, Passion for Paws practices surrender prevention and is dedicated to keeping pets with their families during difficult times.
Passion for Paws delivers pet food to the elderly who may not be able to come in for assistance, helps with walking dogs and subsidizes vet bills.
"We're thrilled to be chosen as a recipient of the DunDun award. We use our funds to benefit animals and pets in Palm Beach County whose owners are in financial distress," Rhodes said.
"We believe that helping owners keep their pets, providing a safety net of assistance during times of hardship, can save the lives of dogs and cats who might otherwise be surrendered."
According to Passion for Paws, last year more than 18,000 dogs and cats were euthanized for not having a home, being feral, being surrendered by their owners or strays being picked up on the street.
"Each year we help more than 150 low-income pet owners and more than 300 cats and dogs to stay together," Rhodes said.
Barrero, who runs the gallery and the events at the arts district, is a pet lover and has two rescue dogs – a 3-year old, 15-pound Jack Russell mix and Moses, an 8-month-old Plott Hound weighing in at 73 pounds, both rescued from the streets.
He said Passion for Paws brings together his passion for dogs and Ms. Cleo.
"I'm excited and honored to sponsor an event for this magnificent cause," Barrero said.
Suggested donation at the door is $12.50 or a 5-pound bag of dry cat/dog food. Visit ConversationsWithCleo.com or crowdrise.com/passionforpawswpb/fundraiser/ycleomiliharris. Information on Passion for Paws may be found at passionforpaws.com. For information on the Arts District, call ActivistArtistA Gallery at 786-521-1199 or email ActivistArtistA@Gmail.com.
