New Times
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, New Times began a search for the best that Broward and Palm Beach Counties have to offer. In this distant past, there was lots of beach time and not much else. New Times' first Best of Broward / Palm Beach® issue gave the people hope. They discovered good places to eat brunch, to grow like Jabba the Hutt, walk their mighty canines in the manner of Chewbacca, and quaff their Jawa beer.

This June, the sunshine strikes back. As the summer heat returns like the Death Star to our tropical clime, New Timescontinues the grand tradition with the 15th Best of Broward / Palm Beach® issue, which will name more than 200 of the area's finest restaurants, hottest clubs, most delightful diversions, and top places to shop.
Now, the force is with you. Readers can join in the Sunshine Wars by casting votes in our online poll. Voting closes May 29

Artists hosting fundraiser in Boynton Beach to send pair to Ecuador

BY LONA O'CONNOR - PALM BEACH POST STAFF WRITER
Nathalie Alfonso and Sofia Bastidas were looking for a solution to the isolation they experienced as young artists. First they turned their Plantation house into a gallery, painting the interior walls white, adding display lights and removing the furniture. They invited small groups of artists to show their work, sometimes for the first time ever.
But they also think big. After three “house” exhibitions, they took a trip to Puerto Rico, where they found artists banding together in small collectives for mutual encouragement and inspiration.
“It was interesting to see how they take the art to another level,” said Alfonso. “The only way to do is was as a group.”
They decided to start an artists’ exchange program, which they are calling “Dwelling Projects.”
Bastidas is from Guayaquil, Ecuador, and has contacts there. An Ecuadoran art collective offered to put them up for a month, where they will produce art, mingle with artists and, on returning to Florida, put on a show of work from the trip.
To raise the money they needed, they opened a page on Kickstarter, a crowd-funding site that allows people like them to pitch an idea to viewers who can donate any amount. So far they have received pledges for $3,700 of the $5,000 they need to send them and two other artists to Ecuador. For donors of larger amounts, they are offering wedding and pet photo shoots, original art and even a dinner party.
Through the local art grapevine, they were introduced to Rolando Chang Barrero, who runs ActivistArtistA, a gallery and performance venue. Since he became the unofficial mayor and indefatigable impresario of Boynton Beach’s small arts district about three years ago, the short strip of storage-unit studios has turned into a bustling hub of arts, culture tours, exhibits and performances.
Barrero offered them studio space for a week. On Saturday, they will have a fundraiser to close the financial gap on their trip. Local artists have donated dozens of photos, prints and other art objects, the proceeds of which will help pay for the trip. The two women and several of their associates have also silk-screened T-shirts with edgy line drawings to commemorate the project.
The show opens at 7 p.m. tonight. Artists will be working at ActivistArtistA, 422 W. Industrial Ave., through May 24. The exhibition’s closing reception will be at 6 p.m. May 23.

Channel 5 News: Artists revitalizing industrial park in Boynton Beach to create art district

Artists revitalizing industrial park in Boynton Beach to create art district

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -
The Boynton Beach Art District is getting a facelift as volunteers work to revitalize an old industrial park near I-95.
The urban revitalization project took place throughout the weekend and is already showing progress.
The groups goal is to turn the area that was once blighted into something vibrant.
West of I-95, off Boynton Beach Boulevard and West Industrial Road is where the volunteers have been working.
The once run down industrial park is now transforming into a home of art.
"I'm basically just spray painting a cartoon character," Joey Cruz said.
Cruz is an artist who was doing graffiti work on a garage bay in the industrial park.
"We are showing the youth and the community that graffiti isn't vandalism," he said. "It's another form of art."
Inside of the bay garages are businesses and artists.
Rolando Chang Barrero is the leading artist behind the revitalization of the industrial park.
He leases out the spaces to other artists in the district.
Barrero said he has big plans for the district, which don't just involve art.
"Our sights are on bringing a juice bar and an organic coffee shop to the area," he sai
He also plans to bring a garden to the side of the road where the industrial park is located.
"We would like to be an educational center for children," Barrero said. "Teaching them how to eat properly. Teaching them how to grow their own food and pick it."
This is just phase one, but Barrero said they can use the help of the public as they complete the next two phases over the next couple months.

Boynton Uniting to Clean Up an Industrial Park: Artists Add Boynton Splash

Ft. Lauderdale artist Nino Liguori paints a mural onto the retractable door of a storage unit in the Boynton Beach Art District near Boynton Beach Blvd. and I-95 on Wednesday, May 15th, 2013. The artwork will help rejuvenate a blighted area into an artistic hub. “Paint It! An Urban Affair “ is an upcoming weekend event, May 18-19, featuring 10 artists painting 10 Bay Gates and over 70 linear feet of wall space. The painting will begin at 6:00 PM on Saturday night and continue through to sunset on Sunday. (Scott Fisher, Correspondent /May 14, 2013)

Boynton Beach is using the power of the people to help beautify a blighted area.
Starting Saturday evening and lasting through Sunday's sunset, the public is invited to "Paint It! An Urban Affair" hosted by ArtistActivistA Gallery to help transform an industrial park into an Arts District.
Graffiti artists, eco-enthusiasts and social entrepreneurs from Miami, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale will join Boynton residents for a community beautification project, including live art, music and urban gardening.
"This is the first time that this many people have come together for one cause to help an otherwise compromised area," said event organizer Rolando Chang Barrero. "Everyone sees the efforts being hosted here to make it into a viable area."
The revitalization project is centered around the "Bay Gate" area, a section of the industrial park filled with empty car garages.

Ten artists will paint 10 murals, amounting to more than 70 linear feet of painted art.
Graffiti artists like Dennis Pomales, 27, will spray paint colorful, eccentric murals for the two-day event.
Pomales couldn't confirm what he would be painting, but he's confident that he will figure it out.
"It's spur of the moment. It's very intuitive, and it always works out," he said. He plans to paint one of the characters that he routinely sketches — some of his characters have six eyes and some have faces made out of pyramids.
"I call my characters ultra-terrestial enlightened beings," he said.
At the event, Pomales wants people to watch how a blank wall can morph into art.
"It's interesting to see the artistic process and get lost in it. Sometimes people are confused as to how the art will turn out, but toward the end they understand," he said.
Other participating artists include Seezone, Winkstyles, Nino Liguori, Flick, Serafima Sokolov, Venom, Ripe, Eduardo Mendieta, Craig McInnes and Paul Caprio.
While art is a major part of the event, improving the community is most important, said Bill Milner, an urban grower, artist and social entrepreneur who will be attending.
Milner and other garden enthusiasts will be working on removing weeds, laying soil and planting flowers in the district.
"I find that projects work out better when people do things on their own," said Milner. "Whether going before the city or a private developer to make change in the community, there must be an initiative from the local community."
But event organizer Barrero said that the city has been very supportive of the area's artistic dreams.
"The city of Boynton Beach is extremely supportive of green and artistic efforts, even during a downturn in the economy they never took their eye off of arts, because the city knows it's value," Battero said.

Sun Sentinel: Urban art meets urban gardens in the Arts District

Nino Liguoria, ActivistArtistA Bay Gates Project

Urban art meets urban gardens in the Arts District

The Bay Gates project at the Boynton Beach Arts District is an ongoing outdoor exhibition started by ArtistActivistA Gallery's Rolando Chang Barrero, who, along with sculptor Rick Beau Lieu, is one of the driving forces behind the district.
Rehabbing an old warehouse space in an industrial area of the city, Barrero initiated the Bay Gates project, an outdoor exhibition of murals and paintings by local and national artists, redecorating a blighted industrial area of automotive garages with brightly colored, graffiti-style artwork and murals.
On Saturday and Sunday, Barrero will put on Paint It! An Urban Affair, a weekend of painting and planting to keep the Arts District fresh and exciting.
"My intention is to provide the city of Boynton Beach and Palm Beach County a destination site where locals and visitors to South Florida can mingle, learn about developments in the arts and enjoy participating in projects specifically designed to enrich our lives," Barrero said.Ten artists will paint 10 bay gates, encompassing more than 70 feet of wall space. The painting project, which is open to everyone to watch and participate, will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday and continue through sunset on Sunday.
Participating artists include: Bulk, Ripe, Vin Jo, Flick, Venom, Veins, Serafima Sokolov, Paul Caprio, Eduardo Mendieta, Seezone, Winkstyes, Nino Liguori and Craig McInnis.
McInnis, 40, an illustrator and multimedia artist who lives in Lake Worth, will collaborate with Mendieta, 39, of West Palm Beach, Caprio and Sokolov to paint the 70-foot wall with the theme of the tree of life.
"Rolando is doing exactly what the city needs. He puts in hard work and makes sure his ideas happen. He's invaluable and his concepts can be duplicated easily in other cities afflicted with urban blight," said McInnis, who does marketing and outreach for Jerry's Artarama, one of the event's sponsors. "The power of live art is exciting and there are always good vibes here."
Bill Milner and his wife Jayne King, co-chairwoman of the green implementation advisory board with the community garden ordinance in Delray Beach, are urban farmers. Their interests are in "all things green." They develop urban green space to make it more sustainable, develop food systems and build community around food.
"We grow anything that will grow in the Florida climate – mangoes, star fruit, avocado, collard greens, tomatoes and okra. We want to bring a green ethos to the art district," Milner said. "Container gardens allow one to garden anywhere, so there is no excuse not to bring greenery everywhere."
They will plant a variety of local species to provide raw eats and education to visitors to the district.
Debby Coles-Dobay, the city's public art administrator, said, "This urban art revitalization project keeps the district fresh and edgy, giving people new reasons to visit. The urban garden adds to community placemaking, encourages entrepreneurship, fosters innovation and nurtures humanity."
The Paint It! weekend includes live music, food and drink. Call Debby Coles-Dobay at 561-742-6026 or Rolando Chang Barrero at 786-521-1199. Visit activistartista.blogspot.com, facebook.com/BoyntonBeachArtInPublicPlaces or boyntonbeacharts.org. The Arts District is at 410 - 422 W. Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach.
Donations of the following are welcome: ladders, power paint sprayer, white outdoor house paint, 2-by-6 wood boards (new or used), vegetable and herb plants and seeds and volunteers to assist with thesactivities.
The opening reception for Dwelling Projects, a student initiative to foster awareness and appreciation for the contemporary visual arts, at the ActivistArtistA Gallery is 7 p.m. Saturday. Closing reception is set for 6 p.m. May 23.

Boynton Beach's Growing Arts Scene Keeps Things "Fresh And Green", by Tricia Woolfenden

Boynton Beach's Growing Arts Scene Keeps Things "Fresh And Green"
As one of the key players behind the up-and-coming Boynton Beach Art District (BBAD), artist and gallery owner Rolando Chang Barrero is getting no down time during South Florida's "off season." Barrero is among the region's year-round residents who stick it out during the slow, sultry months to ensure his pet projects make it through to grow another season.

Artists will work to repaint the bay doors in the Boynton Beach Art District with colorful murals as part of an ongoing public exhibition.
"It's time to get the community to really step it up if we're going to become a year-round arts scene," said Barrero, who owns ActivistArtistA, which serves as something of a launching pad for many of the BBAD projects.
This weekend provides multiple opportunities to experience and participate in what's shaking in the Palm Beach County artists' enclave, which is located in a slowly-but-surely transforming industrial park. In addition to a regularly-scheduled open mike night on Thursday, the neighborhood will host three separate but complementary events throughout the weekend.
In the continuing effort to reinvent the once "blighted" industrial area, Barrero is teaming with local raw chef Nina Kauder for an entirely new component: an urban garden to be set along the fence-line in BBAD. The first "Greening the Park" event is from sunrise to sunset on Sunday and volunteers are welcome. Barrero said the project will begin with the removal of the topsoil in case of contamination (this is an industrial area, after all) and a re-building with organic topsoils.
In the first phase of the project, volunteers will plant sunflowers, pigeon peas, and other summer-hearty plants. Eventually, Kauder and Barrero would like to see people growing and eating food on site, ideally in its raw state. There are hopes for an on-site raw juice bar at some point in the future. Interested volunteers for Sunday's work day can email BoyntonBeachArtDistrict@gmail.com.
Earlier in the weekend is "Paint It! An Urban Affair," part of the ongoing ActivistArtistA bay gates project, wherein local artists contribute to an ever-evolving outdoor exhibition of colorful murals. Outdoor "canvases" -- walls and metal bay doors -- will be prepped on Friday and artists will begin work at 6 p.m. on Saturday and continue throughout Sunday. Among the 14 artists are Eduardo Medietta, Caron Bowman, and many others.
Meanwhile, the gallery itself will host the Dwelling Projects for a one-week residency that begins Saturday. The Dwelling Projects was created in August 2012 as a Florida-based "student initiative" to showcase "young, ambitious" artists in unconventional spaces. The project's current focus, "To Ecuador and Back," seeks to send a small artist collective to Ecuador to live and create art for one month. (Read more about it at theDwelling Projects' Kickstarter page.)
Barrero hopes the diversity of offerings will help to keep the district and surrounding community invigorated throughout the year and even through the dog days of summer.
"It's good for Boynton Beach," Barrero said. "We don't want the momentum to die that started last year. We want to keep it fresh, keep it green, and keep the Boynton Beach Art District on the map."
