After graduating with honors and being awarded The Ryerson Travelling Fellowship in 1990 Rolando began a masters program in art therapy. He also began to travel Europe, Latin America, and Asia. His studies and travel were abruptly interrupted in 1993 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Rolando retuned to the art scene 18 years later in 2011. Since his returned he has organized and developed the thriving Boynton Beach Art District, won many accolades for the press, been featured in many magazines, and successfully established himself as an exhibiting visual artists once again.

Boynton Beach Art District in the news again! WLRN Reports, " Yes, Art Abounds North of Wynwood!

Whats going on in Palm Beach this week?

Thank You! WLRN and Andrea Richard!

Yes, Art Abounds North Of Wynwood

Last week's satirical Fort Lauderdale slam by The Onion claimed the city “lacks any kind of cultural depth," something hotly disputed by locals.
So, where are the cultural gems in Broward and Palm Beach counties? Don’t get fooled by the wealth of strip malls, high-rises, and balmy palm tree landscape.
Culture is alive around these parts -- it’s just not always so easily found.
Granted, Miami leads South Florida’s art scene, with world-renowned Art Basel and the burgeoning Wynwood Arts District, home to the bustling second Saturday art walks and street-art installations with international appeal. But there exist art hubs worth scoping out beyond Miami.
Over recent years, three main art districts have sprung up from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach.  Each spot shares a common vision to support the arts and foster a creative community with a bohemian spirit. Here’s where to find cultural communities outside the 305.
Blocks 410–422 W. Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach
The Boynton Beach Art District occupies a dusty industrial park that has attracted a community of fulltime working artists. It began in early 2012 with public events, like the art walk held on the fourth Thursday of the month, and third Thursdays open mic nights. It was the February 2012 multimedia showcase “Kerowhacked Festival” that got the conversation going. “So nobody knew there was an arts district here until they heard about the events,” says Rolando Chang Barrero, event organizer and owner of ActivistArtistA Gallery.  While this artist-driven site has outdoor murals and street art, Rolando wouldn’t compare this two-block warehouse hub to Wynwood. “Our space is more akin to the Lincoln Road of the late ‘80s, early ‘90s, whereas there were no commercial venues or stores. Then it [Lincoln Road] was a place run by independent artists and nonprofits,” he explains.  At this only city-sanctioned arts district in Palm Beach County, onlookers can find stone sculptures, metal works, public art pieces, paintings, installation works, and hear live music during public events. Next to come are plans to cultivate edible gardens, and repaint the outdoor murals with work.

WLRN on KeroWACKED! Awesome! This Sunday!

KeroWACKED Multimedia Festival Is Sunday In

Palm Beach County's "Art Mecca"

Rolando Chang Barrero (third from right) helped create the Boynton Beach Arts District.
Rolando Chang Barrero is floored by what is happening in the Boynton Beach Arts District, and that's a good thing.
"There is a lot going on," Barrero said.
The artist and creator ofActivistArtistA gallery in Boynton Beach recently participated in launching the first International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium, a project that consumed much of his time in recent months.  (Read WLRN's story on the project.) On top of that, the reinvigorated one-block arts district he helped to foster in Boynton continues to host regular art walks and popular monthly open mic nights.
"Boynton Beach is fast becoming the little art Mecca in Palm Beach County," Barrero said. "Boynton Beach is by far the leader in the area."
The district -- concentrated at 422 West Industrial Avenue -- started out initially as a 300-square-foot warehouse. It has grown from three to 13 artists, and recently added an additional studio and gained outdoor exhibition space. Barrero, who moved from Miami to Boynton Beach in search of more affordable work space, said the district is an area where artists live and work. Unlike Miami's Wynwood, which is home to restaurants and stores in addition to galleries, Boynton's district is dedicated solely to art.
"Everyone who comes here is an artist or a patron of the arts," Barrero said. "It's relaxed and we make it family friendly."
The artists and performers who participate in the art walks and public events are cognizant of the "all ages" makeup of the audience, which Barrero said helps to build a space where kids can appreciate and participate in the arts: "We're trying to create something that's not inside a club or a bar."
Sunday, the district will be abuzz in activity for the second annual KeroWACKED Multimedia Fest, inspired by the Beat Generation.
"We want to create a space where all of the arts are flowing," Barrero said.
Nearly a dozen musicians and bands will perform throughout the day, including Yeshiva and Nmbr11, Mylo Ranger, The Von, Future Prezidents, Making Faces, Koffin Varnish, Suga Wack, Flint Blade, Vis Major, Awake the Lion, and Spencer Allan Patrick.
In addition to art from resident district artists, Graffiti Iconz out of Lake Worth will be on-site, creating new work on an 80-foot wall that Barrero said "changes every three months" and serves as a popular backdrop for local film crews. Belly dancing performances and workshops are on the agenda, as is live painting, chalking, and food from popular Palm Beach County food truck PS561.
KeroWACKED is noon until 10 p.m. on Sunday. The cost is $10 per adult and free to kids ages 13 and younger. If you arrive before noon, there's no admission charge.
