BOCA MAGAZINE! Features Return of Art Walk in "The Week Ahead"

Thank you John Thomason!

THIS THURSDAY, August 28, 2014 | 6-11 PM

What: Return of B-BAD Art Walks
Where: Boynton Beach Arts District, 422 W. Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach
When: 6 to 11 p.m.
Cost: Free
Contact: 786/521-1199, activistartista.blogspot.com

The last Thursdays of the past two months have been unusually quiet at the warehouses-turned-studios of the Boynton Beach Arts District: No customary open galleries, no food trucks, no local vendors, no live music and no fire spinning. The city put the kibosh on the District’s monthly events back in June, raising issues over parking, lighting and, foremost, permitting. This month, Rolando Chang Barrero, the self-effacing head of the District, worked out a permitting agreement with city officials that will see this award-winning art walk continue indefinitely. Expect an extra-celebratory B-BAD Art Walk this week; the musical talent includes the South Palm Beach School of Rock (pictured), aka the young rock stars of tomorrow, who are fresh off a Southeastern tour; and local Americana act the Jon Greco Band. PS561 and Joji Yogurt will supply the nosh.

BOCA Magazine Says,"It's that wonderful time again!"

BOCA MAGAZINE
by John Thomasson!

 THURSDAY

What: BBAD Live!
Where: Boynton Beach Arts District, 410 W. Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach
When: 7 to 11 p.m.
Cost: Free
It’s that wonderful time of the month again, when the Boynton Beach Arts District opens its gallery studios well into the night, and live bands and open-mic performers join food and merch vendors for a night of funky and eclectic entertainment. This week’s BBAD Live event is a special one, because it includes a performance from headlining act Timb! (pictured), a veteran singer-songwriter from South Florida who is an endless fount of creativity. He’s sort of like our region’s answer to Robert Pollard, boasting 10 jam-packed solo albums, a number of EPs and tributes to other bands, and side projects ranging from the psychedelic band Los Torsos to the intriguingly named act The Chocolatey Shatners. Check out his website enchantogen.com, where he gives away many of his releases for free.

BOCA Magazine on Boynton Beach Live (This Thursday)

Boca Magazine by John Thomason

THIS THURSDAY

RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/543490459092430/

What: Return of “Boynton Beach Live”
Where: Boynton Beach Arts District, 400 block of West Industrial Avenue, Boynton Beach
When: 7 to 11 p.m.
Admission: Free
Contact: 786/521-1199, activistartista.blogspot.com

Last month was a reminder that we should never take great things for granted, especially the kind that cost nothing to attend and offer fun and frivolity for an entire evening. They could disappear in two shakes of a lamb’s tail, as January’s popular Third Thursday Art Walk at the Boynton Beach Arts District did, when flood damage set the district back some $60,000. But Rolando Chang Barrero and his dedicated team managed to secure enough funding to rebuild and continue, and this Thursday, the Art Walk is back and better than ever: Performances include live painting from Craig McInnis; live music from JC Dwyer, lead singer of the Mobile Homies; and, as always, Palm Beach County’s favorite fire spinners, the Philosofires.

Very Special Welcome back to DJ Thought of Smooth Bounce Entertainment!!

BOCA Magazine on Baby Whores Exhibit...

"Political Circus" by  eVol i art at ActivistArtistA Gallery
BOCA Magazine: The Week Ahead

"...resoundingly clear and provocatively accurate..."

Opening night of “Baby Whores and Other Political Commentaries” at

ActivistArtistA Gallery

422 W. Industrial Ave., Boynton Beach; 7 to 10 p.m.; free; 786/521-1199 or www.activistartista.com

The implication in the above painting is resoundingly clear and provocatively accurate: The Democrats and Republicans are both mere puppets of the pigs on Wall Street. Thomas Nast couldn’t have said it, or sketched it, any better, and it’s just one of many works, from more than seven artists, that will explore political, cultural and social issues, past and present, at this group show in the heart of the
 Boynton Beach Arts District.

The controversial title “Baby Whores” comes from an installation called “The Evolution of Oppression” by local artist Virginia Erdie, which was censored and banned from her previous studio. Get ready for a
thought-provoking evening. The exhibition runs through April 19.
