The Meet the Maker series is a high-impact rotation of visual artists exhibiting their work and leading programs that introduce new and exciting art and art-making techniques to Museum visitors, staff and educators.  By cultivating relationships with local and national artists, the Museum hopes to encourage artists to collaborate with children while introducing visitors to their work.
The goal of the program is to develop new insights by incorporating the artistic process with other investigative processes in the development of new art works at SCM and exposing those processes to the general public.
  • To enhance the role of SCM as a center of cultural investigation for families and children.
  • To make emerging artists’ artwork more accessible to the public.
  • To provide new avenues of art exploration for SCM.

Artists with demonstrated capabilities for working on immersive, collaborative, interactive, and/or performance art works are eligible. The program is intended to support emerging artists in their development, although mid-career and established artists are encouraged to apply as well.

The format of the program is designed with the intent that artists and the public will collaborate on a body of work together.  On alternating Saturdays within a given month the artist will locate themselves in the Museum classroom where they will offer an easily accessible project to all visiting guests that reflects the core themes of their oeuvre.  The program will run for approximately 3 hours.

Participating artists receive administrative support from the SCM staff, including assistance in developing concepts for potential works and the following support:

  • A materials and equipment fund is available in amounts to be determined dependent upon the proposed project.
  • Museum staff support to assist in the identification and securing of materials.
  • All prototypes and examples will be fabricated by the artist. Limited skilled labor support during the fabrication and installation process will be available, as needed.
  • Marketing and publicity for the dates of the program and artist’s exhibit.
  • Access to the Museum classroom, theater, Community Archive, and lobby.
  • Space to exhibit their work for sale within the Community Archive Space and/Museum lobby.
