New Times Events!

New Times Events
If you felt so inclined, you could leave your wallet at home for Suga Wack’s performance at Thursday night’s Boynton Beach Art Walk. You may, however, consider bringing along some furniture (preferably a folding lawn chair) for the endeavor, because it’s going to be a long night, according to Rolando Chang Barrero, director of the walk and ActivistArtistA. Barrero describes Suga Wack as an experimental chamber jazz band. “It’s nontraditional, like everything that goes on in my space,” he said. Nine South Florida artists will open their studio spaces for the art walk, in addition to an opening reception for a new show, “Symbolism: Pushing Boundaries.” School-themed food truck PS561 will be on the premises selling food and drinks. The performance will take place at 422 W. Industrial Ave. in Boynton Beach. The music starts at 5:30 p.m., the exhibition opens at 6, and there is no admission charge for any of the events. Paul Slater Sends Art Adrift

Saturday July 7, 2012 Launch 8am
Oceanfront Beach Park, 6415 N. Ocean Blvd

The “Jellyfish Drift Project” is a community sponsored project by Paul "PAULO" Slater of the BicycleXchange, to excite beach cleanup efforts.
Join us, The City of Boynton Beach Art in Public Places and Surfrider Foundation Palm Beach County , Recreation and Parks Department, Economic Development Department, Go Green Boynton, Jupiter Pointe Paddling and collaboration with community sponsors as we launch our Science meets Art Gulfstream Drift Project.

Read more about the project.....
Paul Slater stepped over the litter at Riviera Beach in December and had an idea: Instead of trash drifting to shore, "wouldn't it be cool if it was a piece of artwork that washed up instead?"
Somewhere along the Eastern Seaboard, that's going to happen, says Slater, a Palm Beach County artist. After he drops his brushed-metal sculpture into the sea July 7, the Gulf Stream will pull it north for a distant beachgoer to find.
"I really wanted somebody to get excited about finding a piece of artwork on the beach, like I was," he said.

Slater, 34, is a bearded Lake Park resident whose trademark jellyfish pieces have become a common sight in Boynton Beach. They've been exhibited in City Hall and local gallery exhibitions, and Commissioner Marlene Ross has one of his works in her home.
Now his art will go on a nautical tour.
"There's a possibility it will reach England," Slater said.
The Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current from the Gulf of Mexico, comes within nine miles of the South Florida coast each summer. It continues toward Canada and eventually crosses to the British isles.
With good weather on July 7, Slater and an entourage of paddlers and boaters will head out from Oceanfront Park in Ocean Ridge. Halfway into the Gulf Stream, they plan to release the sculpture, a shoulder-high aluminum plate bolted to a bamboo cross.
"Plastic bags in the ocean look like floating jellyfish," said Debby Coles-Dobay, the Boynton Beach public art administrator who helped publicize the project, which seeks to raise awareness of the environmental impact of litter.
Slater creates his metal art by brushing grooves into the surface. Then he applies watercolor paint that seeps into the grooves for an aquatic look. In this case, he drew a green jellyfish on blue sea. On the back, an engraving will explain the drift-art project to the person who finds it.
"Of all my compositions, I liked it the least," said Slater, explaining why he was willing to let the $300 artwork go. "The ocean will make it more interesting."
Such projects aren't unheard of. In October, an eight-foot-tall fiberglass Lego man washed onto a Sarasota beach in a drift-art project apparently created by a Dutch gallery. The county sheriff collected it to see if anyone would claim it but didn't seek any littering fines.
Slater said the inspiration for his project was his own. He has a passion for environmental protection, having studied sustainable development, and he appreciates community art.
On the side, Slater builds bicycles and pushes volunteerism through BicycleXchange, the nonprofit he founded. Encouraging people to hit the beaches is part of why he's launching art into the abyss, he said.
"He's a very big community leader as far as recycling and bicycling is concerned," said Rolando Chang Barrero, a Boynton Beachgallery director who has shown Slater's work.
Slater wants to put a GPS system on his piece, but only for curiosity's sake. He doesn't want it back. Whoever finds it — in Georgia or North Carolina or England — gets to keep it.

Pathetic Poetry By Billy Hitz

Follow this Blog

"Rolando, Thanks for all the fun and art.."
Billy Hitz

The book of prose, "Pathectic Poetry," by Billy Hitz is a self published volume of, well what else, pathetic poetry.  Composed in blank verse, the collection is burleque at times, yet always true to the  carpe diem style of which his life is a testament to.

With that said, I was not given the book to reveiw; I am not qualified to do so.

It was a heartwarming gift; one artist to another.  I was glad he did.  Truthfully, it sat at the edge of my bed waiting to be read for months. I don't get the luxury of enjoying a book to often these days.

Finally, in need of inspiration I reached for it as I ran out the door to teach my first class of the summer.
Basic Drawing...For Fun!  Having the remnants of a once keen photographic memory, I glanced through the book as only Evelyn Wood could!

Of course my initial glance brought forth horrific images. I started laughing hysterically, as I pieced together the words from the different poems I read.

This is what stood out as I did my quick flip reading technique!

"Eat up the rich,
You fuck an old friend.
Jibberish,
Annoying, Constant,
etc...."

I knew my class was going to be fun!

I gave my students a class on typography and the letter as drawing.  Using branches, india ink and charcoal, they were to rewrite parts of Billy's poem, "Love down low."

Here is the poem and the images created...

Love down low

If love won't grow

Just let it go

Get over it!

Set yourself free

When love is gone

Take time to move on

Just knowing it

helps you to see

When love is entwined

With our wasted time

Get on with it!

Don't let it last

Deep down you know

You must let go

Step over it!

Start a new dance!

I have since read the whole volume and recommend it!

Many thanks to Shelly Constantino for allowing me to use her studio for the June classes!
Please call if you are interested in the July "Drawing for Fun," course! 786-521-1199

Trading Card ART CALL

Suppprt ActivistArtistA Gallery Please vote for us!

OK EVERYONE!!!
Let's pass this art call around!

“Local Art” (Series 1) Trading Card initiative
Brought to you by Local Artists Coming Together (LACT)

Local Artists Coming Together is a group of artists who hunger to be more. Seeking inspiration and knowledge, we come together to empower one another through shared experiences, tricks of the trade and in learning from the success of those who came before us. What better way to announce ourselves to the world than to throw our first event? So without further ado…

Artists of all mediums are invited to submit original works of art set to the theme “I Love the 80’s”. Ever want to have your art featured in a series of trading cards? Well this is the event you’ve been waiting for! The goal of this project is to inspire/expand the existing local Jacksonville art scene through a partnership with local businesses. Ten (10) submissions will be selected to create a series of collectible artist trading cards called “Local Artists” (Series 1). Each artist who is chosen for the set will receive 70 sets of the cards to do with as they see fit.

Here’s how to enter:

• Create an original piece of art set to the theme I Love the 80’s
• Submissions may be of ANY medium.
• Artists do NOT have to be local to Jacksonville.
• The end measurements of the cards will be 2.5” X 3.5” so scale your submission(s) accordingly.
• There is NO COST to enter.
• Submission deadline is July 30th.
• Submit your entries to LACT@notjustapen.net.
• JPG, JPEG and PNG file types accepted.
• The higher the resolution of the image the better. Don’t be left behind because you took a photo of your amazing piece of art with your cell phone camera.
• Participants are urged to join the group on Facebook here:http://www.facebook.com/groups/265750333516084/ as well as 'Like' the fan page to keep tabs on their score here: http://www.facebook.com/LOCALARTISTSCOMINGTOGETHER
