The ActivistArtiststA Bay Gates Project began in mid 2011 to the sound of a local santero playing his conga drum while artist Chan Shepherd created a brown skinned Babalú Ayé a/k/a San Lázaro to the bay gate of the recently opened ActivistArtistA Gallery at what is now recognized as the Boynton Beach Art District. 

Rolando Chang Barrero initiated the outdoor exhibition project with the assistance of Boynton Beach's Public Arts Administrator, Debby Coles-Dobay, who was instrumental in getting an addendum to allow the murals at the Boynton Beach Art District located in Boynton Beach's Industrial Park area.

Artists for Climate Action, including many from Boynton Beach, marched in Miami on Oct. 14 with the local chapter of the South Florida Climate Action Coalition as a follow up to the People's Climate March in New York City last October.
Working out of HackLab in Boynton Beach, the artists mobilized and created a large illuminated sun that they carried aloft during the march. Read full story here SunSentinel TODAY
"Local artists, including Rolando Chang Barrero, founder of the Boynton Beach Arts District, snapped photos of the recent high tides, as part of the King Tides Project, an international initiative of citizen scientists capturing data and images showing what future sea levels will be and what is at risk.During the recent supermoon, Barrero went out with his camera and caught images of flooded streets along East Ocean Avenue and the Boynton Beach Marina and of the Palm Beach Yacht Club on Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach."

Blank Canvas Gallery will be hosting the Cuban-American Exhibition “Cuba Libre” for the month of November. Its opening will take place November 5th 2015 at 6pm.  Blank Canvas Gallery is located in Wynwood, Miami's most notable art district, at 46 NW 36th Street, Suite #3, Miami, Florida 33127, the gallery will showcase eight contemporary artists: Alejandro Justiz - Damien Cruz- Freddy Villamil Jose Gonzalez Grillo- Marcy Grosso - Patricio Rodriguez - Raul Hernandez and Rolando Chang Barrerowhose artwork constantly promote freedom of creativity. 

“Cuba Libre” will be open to the public until November 25th 2015 and a percentage of the sales for this month will be donated to buy art supply for children in need. We hope to get the attention from the Latin-American public for this Hispanic Heritage month and the support of the residents of south Florida to the Latin-American art.

The Freddy and Nickie Hennevelt of ARTX: Northwood Village Art District in West Palm will join Fort Lauderdale’s MASS Art District director, Ed Burnette, 
at the Boynton Beach Art District's 5 year anniversary celebration.
ARTX and MASS will be bringing select artists to BBAD in an unprecedented exchange between Palm Beach and Broward Counties organized by BBAD director, Rolando Chang Barrero.

Golden Art and Music Celebration will also bring artists from Dade County for the day long series of festivities that include:

Inspiring Works Murals the yearly transformation of the ActivistArtistA Bay Gates Project where muralist Eduardo Mendieta, Ripes, Kelcie McQuaid, Pascual Bartolo, Chris Acevedo, Renda Writer, Jonathan Fields, Patricia Awapara, Melissa Martinez, Marcos Conde, and Dalhia Patrice Perryman will be painting live.

ON THE SPOT VISHAN SEENATH
Age 30
He graduated from Florida State University in 2008 and West Dean College in 2012, earned his master’s of fine arts in painting and drawing from the University of Sussex, England, 2012.
Of Indian descent, Seenath was born in the United States to par- ents from Trinidad.


How did you come to the Boynton Beach Arts District?
I had been to events at BBAD and got to know Rolando Chang Barrero, the founder of the Arts District. I was teaching art in a middle school and when my contract was up, I decided to use the time to create and work on my art.
What is your style?
It’s a mixture of everything I’ve learned, incor- porating Western-style art and incorporating Asian-influenced aesthetics, including cultural in- fluences from Indian, Thai and Buddhist artwork. I also work in pen and ink and prefer to paint with acrylics.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I study Indian art from the past and incorpo- rate its influences into my work, focusing on is- sues such as racism and colonialism that affect me and other minorities. Much of my work is po- litical in nature, dealing with social issues, factory and migrant workers, social consciousness and my experiences in cross-cultural dating.
What do you want to achieve with your art?
I want to show people a different perspective, to see something from another’s perspective. If you can do this through art, that’s what makes it great. Open a window into another’s reality.
Are you disciplined in your art practice?
No. Distractions take over. It goes in cycles. I can paint and draw frenetically, then nothing, while I wait for inspiration to hit.
What is your creative process like?
I spend time looking back at my old work and sketchbooks to give me new ideas. I’m re- imagining old work in new contexts, and spend- ing time in self-reflection. I use a computer to do preliminary drawings. Then I print them and use carbon paper to trace the images onto the canvas. It’s exacting work.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Getting through graduate school. It’s one of the toughest things I’ve ever done. It’s changed my outlook. I don’t have the same inhibitions I had before. I channel my strongest ideas into my work and see what happens. I’ve created some controversy with my work and have gotten a strong response from the public. I challenged people’s ideas and preconceived notions and, in the process, have grown both personally and ar- tistically.
What did you want to be growing up?
A geneticist or biomedical engineer. I started those studies at FSU before I switched to art.
Whose work do you admire?
I love the work of Pakistani artist Shahzia Sikander, an expert in Indo-Persian miniature painting. I met her at the Norton Museum of Art last year and she is one of the first South Asian artists to contemporize Indian art, combining Muslim imagery and Indian themes.
What quality do you value most in yourself?
I’m curious about everything. I go beyond the superficial and try to learn as much as possible. I’m curious about the science and physics of everything.
